One homeowner, for example, requested a “Party Music” button that routed a personal playlist throughout the interior and across landscape speakers in both yards.

“This was a fun party button to program,” Barefoot said.

A custom movie scene can work on the same principle. Lighting levels can fade gradually while blackout shades lower. The AV system can then activate the theater equipment and select the appropriate surround-sound settings. Each command becomes part of one coordinated sequence that begins with a single interaction.

Whole-home scenes, such as “Goodbye” and “Good Night,” can coordinate lighting with climate control and security, while individual rooms can use straightforward settings such as “All On,” “All Off,” “Medium,” and “Dim.” Keeping these controls simple provides familiar choices to easily use throughout the day. That simplicity matters because daily routines can reveal opportunities that are difficult to predict during programming.

“We ask them to live with it for a while in some cases and let us know what is working and what they might want to change,” Caleb explained.

You can also make many adjustments yourself. “People can absolutely edit lighting scenes and even create their own,” he said. Port City Sound and Security keeps project backups as well, giving the team a reliable reference if a homeowner wants help restoring or refining the programming later.

“Wall keypads near room entrances should be isolated to local lighting or pathway scenes,” Barefoot explained. “You do not want single wall buttons triggering TVs or full-house audio/video in room keypads where someone could accidentally hit them at night while everyone is sleeping.” 

Personal preferences can also stay personal. Lighting scenes can be customized around each family member’s preferred settings, while many entertainment services maintain individual profiles for playlists and viewing preferences.

The goal is for every interaction to feel familiar. “It just makes everyday life easier,” Barefoot said. “Clients often think integrated smart homes are complicated, but they don't realize that buying piecemeal ‘smart’ devices is actually much worse—leading to a chaotic mess of a different app/controller for every single brand.”
